Metal stud or metal track: what is the difference?
Studs are the uprights of the wall. Track is the channel fixed along the floor and the ceiling that the studs stand in. Each track is 2mm wider than the stud it takes: 52mm track for 50mm stud, 72mm for 70mm, 94mm for 92mm and 148mm for 146mm. A metal stud partition needs both, and is boarded on both sides.
C stud, I stud or AcouStud?
C studs are the standard metal studs for non-loadbearing internal partitions, also called metal studwork, steel studding or drywall studs. I studs are a stronger section for building higher partitions at the same wall width. Gypframe AcouStuds are shaped to cut the sound passing through the wall, in 70mm, 92mm and 146mm.
Which metal stud size?
The stud width sets the thickness of the wall. A 70mm C stud in 72mm track with one layer of 12.5mm plasterboard each side gives a wall 97mm thick. Use 50mm metal stud where space is tight, and 92mm or 146mm stud, or studs at closer centres, for taller walls. Our guides to metal stud sizes and maximum partition heights go through each width.
Aluminium studs and metal stud wall kits
Metal studs are often called aluminium studs, but the stud and track that suppliers sell for drylining and metal stud partitioning is steel, not aluminium. There is no boxed stud wall kit to buy: studs and track are sold by the length, in packs of 10 or in 50-length packs, so the frame is made up to the height and length of your own wall.
Metal stud and track prices: what changes the cost
Each length and pack is priced on this page, ex and inc VAT. The width and the length of the section set the price, and Libra / Hadley is the lower-priced range. Delivery is free on orders of £500 or more ex VAT, £45 below that and £60 below £200, and code TAKE2 takes 2% off orders over £2,000 + VAT.
Metal stud ceilings and wall linings
A plasterboard ceiling on a metal frame uses the MF ceiling system of MF5 ceiling sections and MF7 primary support channels, not stud and track. To dry line a masonry wall on a metal frame, see the wall lining system, and for sound insulation between rooms add resilient bars or acoustic insulation between the studs.
